Firefox tips

How to sync Firefox settings between computers

You can use Firefox Sync to synchronize your bookmarks, passwords, settings, history, and tabs with Firefox on other computers. First just set up Firefox Sync on your main computer and then add each of the other computers.

Part 1: Set up Firefox Sync on your main computer

  • At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button (Tools menu in Windows XP) and then click Options . In the Options window, click on the Sync tab.
  • Click Set Up Firefox Sync

  • Click Create a New Account

  • Enter your email address, create a password and confirm it. Then check "I agree to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy" and click Next.
  • This is your Sync Key. Now is a good time to save or print a copy of your key and store it somewhere safe. When you are done with this step, click Next.

  • The Sync Key is used to encrypt your data before it's sent to the Mozilla servers. Think of it as a key that locks your information in a vault that only you can open. This means that neither Mozilla nor anyone else can read your information without having your Sync Key to unlock it.
  • Confirm that you are not a robot by entering the text from the image. Then click Next.
  • You will see a Setup Complete! message. Click Finish to close the setup window and take you back to the Sync panel.

You do not need to do anything else. Firefox Sync will automatically sync your data in the background from here on.
This first sync should happen quickly but may take more than 30 minutes depending on how much information needs to be synced.

Part 2: Get the easy setup code from your other computer

  • Do these steps on the second computer that you are trying to add to Firefox Sync.
  • At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button (Tools menu in Windows XP) and then click Options . In the Options window, click on the Sync tab.
  • Click Set Up Firefox Sync

  • Under I already have a Firefox Sync account click Connect and the code to add this computer will be displayed.

Part 3: Connect your other computer to your Sync account
Do these steps on the computer from Part 1.

  • In the Firefox Sync Account section, click on Add a Device and the Add a Device window will open.

  • Enter the code in the Add a Device window as it's displayed on your second device. Then click Next.

  • When the code is accepted you will see a Device Connected message in Firefox and your device will immediately begin syncing. Click Finish to close the setup window and go back to the Sync panel.

What if you are not near your first computer?
Do these steps on the second computer that you are trying to add to Firefox Sync.

  • If you are trying to add another computer to Firefox Sync and you are not near your first computer so that you can enter the code, you can still get it done by entering your account information.
  • At the top of the Firefox window, click on the Firefox button (Tools menu in Windows XP) and then click Options
  • Click on the Sync tab.
  • Click Set up Firefox Sync and a new window will open.
  • Under I already have a Firefox Sync account, click Connect
  • From the Add a Device screenConnect to Sync screen, click I don't have the device with metap I'm not near my computer...
  • Next, enter your Account Name (email address), Password, Sync Key and clicktap Connect
